Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu at Lok Niwas on Monday to discuss the capital’s development priorities, public safety and civic arrangements during the festive season.
According to an official statement, the discussions covered development-related issues and measures to ensure the smooth delivery of essential services and maintain public safety across the city.
The meeting came a day after the Delhi government organised a large-scale voluntary campaign to clean the banks of the Yamuna. The drive on Sunday brought together around 35,000 participants, including 20,000 citizens, families and resident welfare association members, 10,500 party workers, 2,500 students and 2,000 NGO volunteers.
Students from more than 25 Delhi University colleges participated, including over 400 from Deshbandhu College. The operation removed 76,755 kg of municipal solid waste, with 26 JCB machines, 19 tractor-trolleys, 24 boats, seven weed harvesters, trash skimmers and 269 Public Works Department maintenance vans deployed for the exercise, an official said.
Gupta also inaugurated a Rs 16-crore biogas plant at Goyla Dairy on Monday. The facility can process 200 metric tonnes of cattle dung daily to produce clean fuel and organic manure.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said three biogas plants had been commissioned in Delhi in 18 months, with six more planned. She said the initiative would support efforts to clean the Yamuna and make the capital greener.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for 43 Delhi Jal Board projects on October 22, involving a total investment of Rs 8,941.22 crore.
The projects include a new 124-million-gallon-per-day sewage treatment plant at Okhla, upgrades to eight existing plants, new decentralised treatment plants and sewage pumping stations in outer Delhi, and an expanded sewer network.
Other planned works include a 477-million-litre-per-day water treatment plant at Chandrawal and a 4.5-km trunk drain in Mundka. The projects are intended to improve sewage treatment, water supply and drainage infrastructure across the capital.
