Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Tuesday criticised party MP Sanjay Raut’s remarks about the burning of Albania’s Supreme Court, saying that suggesting India should learn from such incidents was inappropriate and undermined the country’s democracy and Constitution.
Chaturvedi said violence could not resolve grievances and urged people to pursue their demands through peaceful protests and lawful means rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Raut had written on X that protesters in Albania had set fire to the Supreme Court because of anger over alleged corruption involving the prime minister and the judiciary’s role. He also referred to attacks on Parliament, government offices and ministers’ homes, adding that countries, particularly India, should learn a lesson from the events.
Responding to the remarks, Chaturvedi said the appropriate lesson was to respect the justice system and maintain law and order.
“The only lesson we should learn is that we must not take the justice system and law and order into our own hands and should avoid such violent protests. Violence achieves nothing and goes against the interests of the country. Whether in Bangladesh, Nepal, Albania or France, these incidents begin with student protests, after which bad-faith actors get involved, leading to such incidents,” she said.
She cited her party’s protests over political and electoral issues as examples of pursuing demands through democratic channels. Chaturvedi referred to the campaign seeking the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and said her party was now pursuing its demand for Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation through the Supreme Court.
“This fight is for our country’s Constitution and democracy. The way we removed Dharmendra Pradhan from the post through a peaceful protest. Now, our fight to ensure that the Election Commission is not undermined and to seek the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar is being pursued in the Supreme Court,” she said.
Chaturvedi added that suggesting India should learn from violent unrest was wrong and weakened democratic and constitutional values.
BJP leaders also criticised Raut’s remarks, accusing him of promoting anarchy and demanding an apology.
