Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday met the family of Bikramjit Singh, an anti-drug activist allegedly shot dead in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, amid growing demands for action against drug trafficking and violence targeting those opposing the narcotics trade.
Shah spent around 15 minutes with the family, which reportedly submitted a list of demands seeking a fair investigation, a government job and financial assistance.
Bikramjit Singh was allegedly shot dead on October 15 in the Mari Pannwan village area under Hargobindpur Sahib in Gurdaspur district. The incident reportedly occurred in the context of opposition to drug sales.
The meeting was part of Shah’s Punjab visit to meet the families of three individuals whose deaths have drawn attention to the state’s drug problem. He was also scheduled to meet the family of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa and the family of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur.
The Union Home Ministry has sought detailed reports from the Punjab government regarding recent deaths amid concerns over drug-related violence. Shah was also scheduled to attend Dussehra celebrations at Daresi Ground in Ludhiana, where the anti-drug message was expected to feature prominently.
Ahead of Shah’s visit, the Aam Aadmi Party government announced that the case involving Parvinder Singh Jhota would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in response to the family’s demand.
“We stand firmly with the father and family of Parminder Singh Jhota, who has been fighting against drugs. Respecting the family’s demand, we are handing over the case to the CBI,” Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann wrote on X.
Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar criticised the delay in ordering the CBI probe and called for a wider investigation into the alleged nexus behind drug-related violence.
“We request the honorable Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji, who is on a visit to Punjab, that now when the CBI investigation begins, it should be conducted on a broader scale and completed within a stipulated timeframe to expose the entire nexus behind it, so that the victims can get complete justice,” Jakhar wrote on X.
