Mumbai, October 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Mumbai Police detained Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi on Saturday while he was on his way to August Kranti Maidan to join a proposed protest in support of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) demonstration in Delhi.

Tushar Gandhi, who heads the organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’, had posted a message on X on Friday sharing a poster urging Mumbaikars to assemble at August Kranti Maidan at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday in solidarity with the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar.

Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Ragasudha R said the Gamdevi police station had not received an application for the proposed gathering and that permission had not been granted.

A police official said August Kranti Maidan was not an authorised protest venue, citing a High Court order restricting demonstrations at the location.

Tushar Gandhi had also been present on stage during a protest held at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2.

Meanwhile, security was tightened across Delhi ahead of the proposed CJP and All India Students’ Association (AISA) protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of manipulation of electoral rolls.

More than 20,000 police personnel and Central Armed Police Forces members were deployed across the national capital. Entry and exit gates at 45 Delhi Metro stations had remained closed since Friday night, while train services to two major railway stations in Delhi were cancelled, according to the source report.

The heightened security followed earlier protests over the NEET paper leak and the July 20 unrest. Authorities intensified surveillance amid concerns about a large mobilisation, with permission for the proposed CJP gathering yet to be granted.

Earlier on Saturday, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Gurugram’s Sector 56. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were also detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport upon arrival ahead of the planned demonstration.

The CJP and its supporters have called for action against Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
