Several Nepali expedition guides and support staff are missing after an avalanche hit the base camp of Mt. Himlung in Nepal’s Manang district on Sunday, according to expedition companies.
The staff were at the base camp to fix ropes and set up tents ahead of the autumn climbing season.
Barun Bhandari, general manager of an expedition company, said more than half a dozen of its staff were believed to be missing, although the exact number could not be confirmed as contact could not be established after brief communication with one staff member early Sunday.
He said more than 20 staff members from his company were part of the team at the base camp.
Another expedition company also confirmed that some of its staff were affected by the avalanche but did not provide a figure.
The Kathmandu Post, citing trekking officials, reported that at least 14 Nepalis were missing on Himlung Himal in the Nar Phu region of Manang.
Manang Chief District Officer Mukti Prasad Khanal said the number of missing people had not yet been confirmed. “Rescue helicopters have been sent to the area where the avalanche occurred,” he said.
The incident comes amid adverse weather conditions across Nepal. The District Administration Office in Manang had prohibited trekking in several high-altitude areas from September 25 to 27 following forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall and snowfall in higher Himalayan areas.
The restriction was imposed following a decision by the District Security Committee over the potential risk to life from adverse weather.
Nepal has been experiencing incessant rainfall in several areas since September 24, with rising water levels in several rivers prompting authorities to advise people living along river corridors to move to higher ground.
