Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme in Delhi has triggered a political exchange, with Congress questioning the government’s involvement in religious activities, while the BJP and Shiv Sena defended the event as a cultural and youth-oriented initiative.
Modi attended the programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park on Friday to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. He was seen listening to devotional songs, clapping and playing a tambourine-like instrument during the event.
Congress leader Udit Raj said the Prime Minister was trying to replicate the style of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, contrasting Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ with Gandhi’s public interactions with people.
Congress MP Pawan Khera said Modi could do what he wanted but added that his party was concerned about the country.
Congress MP Karamvir Singh Boudh questioned the government’s involvement in religious activities.
“The job of governments is not to promote any religion. This is unconstitutional,” he said, arguing that religious activities should be the responsibility of religious institutions and that the government should not act in a one-sided manner in a diverse country.
The BJP and Shiv Sena rejected the criticism.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC said the programme should be viewed through the broader lens of culture and wellness rather than solely as a religious event. She said the format provides young people an opportunity to engage with devotional music while also discussing issues such as employment and stress.
BJP MP Tarun Chugh accused the Congress of insulting India’s devotional traditions and culture. He said the growing popularity of ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ among young people reflected a contemporary way of engaging with spirituality.
The format combines traditional devotional songs with the atmosphere and production elements of a live music event and has gained visibility among younger audiences. Modi had also spoken positively about the trend earlier this year, describing it as a blend of devotion, culture, spirituality and modernity.
Following Friday’s event, Modi posted on social media: “Bhajan Clubbing in Delhi. Spectacular!”
