Commonwealth Games gold medallist Priya Ghanghas produced a commanding performance to stun two-time World medallist Oh Yeonji of South Korea 5-0 in the women’s 60kg round of 16 at the Asian Games here on Saturday.
Priya dominated all three rounds at the Nishio Gymnasium, earning three judges’ cards of 30-27 and two of 29-28 to seal a unanimous victory.
She began strongly, winning the opening round 5-0 with precise punches and forcing a standing count as her jabs troubled the South Korean boxer.
Priya maintained her composure in the second round, defending effectively and using her left jabs to counter Oh’s attacks and take the round unanimously.
Oh attempted to increase the pressure in the final round, but Priya responded with effective counter-punching and won the round 3-2 to complete the victory.
Priya will face Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova in the quarterfinals on Monday, with a place in the semifinals at stake.
Earlier, Kapil advanced to the men’s 90kg quarterfinals after defeating Iran’s Sam Estaki 5-0 on a unanimous decision. He will meet South Korea’s Kim Gichae in the last eight on Monday.
However, Commonwealth Games 2026 silver medallist Jadumani Singh bowed out after losing his men’s 55kg round-of-16 bout to Philippines’ Carlo Paalam.
Indian boxers have also made progress in other categories. Parveen advanced to the women’s 65kg quarterfinals after receiving a walkover from Tajikistan’s Malika Nozimova in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Parveen, whose bronze medal was taken off her at the Hangzhou Asian Games, will face reigning world silver medallist Navbakhor Khamidova of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals.
Ankush has also progressed to the quarterfinals in his category.
