Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit Indore on Saturday to participate in the Congress’ ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ outreach programme, which the party is positioning as a platform to highlight issues concerning students, education, recruitment and unemployment in Madhya Pradesh.
According to the Congress, Gandhi is scheduled to leave Delhi at 12:10 p.m. and reach Indore Airport around 1:45 p.m. Senior party leaders, including Madhya Pradesh in-charge Harish Choudhary, state Congress president Jitu Patwari, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Umang Singhar and MLA Arif Masood, are expected to receive him.
Gandhi will then leave for the Radisson Hotel around 2:05 p.m., reaching there by approximately 2:30 p.m. Congress workers have planned receptions at five locations along the route, including Lavkush Square, MR-10 Square, Vijay Nagar Square and the area near the hotel.
He is scheduled to remain at the hotel until around 5:30 p.m. before travelling to Bharat Jodo Maidan, opposite Regional Park, for the main programme. Gandhi is expected to spend around two-and-a-half hours at the venue, with his stage programme likely to last about an hour.
The Congress has described the event as a student-focused outreach programme and is expected to raise issues including examination irregularities, education and employment.
The visit has also acquired a political dimension following a dispute over the venue. The programme was initially proposed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium but was shifted to the ground opposite Regional Park after permission to use the stadium was not granted. The Congress and BJP have traded allegations over the issue.
The Indore programme is part of Gandhi’s wider ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ outreach initiative, with earlier editions held in Kota, Dehradun, Prayagraj and Pune.
After the event, Gandhi is scheduled to leave directly for the airport around 8 p.m. and depart for Delhi at 9 p.m., with arrival in the national capital expected around 10:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Indore Police have put extensive security and traffic arrangements in place for the visit. Traffic diversions will come into effect from 1 p.m. and remain in force until the programme concludes.
Police have also laid down security requirements covering crowd management, entry and exit arrangements, parking, medical facilities, surveillance and emergency response at the venue.
Ahead of Gandhi’s visit, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari said the programme would give young people an opportunity to raise their concerns.
“Today is the day of meaningful dialogue with the voices, questions and dreams of the youth in Indore. Come, witness the questions related to education, opportunities and rights reaching the platform of democracy,” Patwari said.
