The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the J&K Crime Branch, Kashmir, has arrested an alleged fraudster in connection with a Rs 93 lakh land and property cheating case, officials said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar, a resident of Jawalapora, Samson, Budgam, was arrested in compliance with an order and warrant issued by the court of the Sub-Judge, Srinagar, according to an EOW statement.
Dar had allegedly been evading arrest for nearly a year. The Crime Branch said he is involved in multiple cases registered at Police Station EOW Kashmir/SCW Kashmir, including FIR No. 17/2026 under Sections 318(4), 338, 340 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case originated from a written complaint alleging that the victim was cheated of Rs 93 lakh by Dar, who allegedly acted in connivance with co-accused Soom Nath Koul, a resident of Lotus Tower, Bengaluru/Janipur, Jammu.
According to the investigation, the accused allegedly offered to sell five kanals of migrant land in Drusu, Pulwama, along with 300 standing trees in Bijbehara, Anantnag. The transactions were allegedly backed by forged agreements.
Investigators also found that a bank account allegedly used to receive the defrauded money was opened on the same day the money was transferred, reportedly for the purpose of carrying out the fraudulent transaction.
The Crime Branch alleged that Dar and Koul targeted people by making false promises of selling migrant properties while representing themselves as attorney holders or owners of the properties.
A Hue and Cry Notice remains in force for the absconding co-accused, Soom Nath Koul.
Further investigation into the alleged fraud network and its operations is underway.
The EOW is a specialised wing of the J&K Crime Branch tasked with investigating high-profile economic offences. The agency said such cases require dedicated investigation teams supported by technology, given the law-and-order, security and other responsibilities handled by territorial police units.
