The Magadi Road Police have registered an FIR and intensified their investigation into the alleged kidnapping of a 21-year-old married woman from Agrahara Dasarahalli by a group of people from Rajasthan, followed by a high-speed chase in which their vehicle reportedly hit dozens of vehicles.
The case has been registered under Sections 137, 61 and 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to police, the woman, identified as Pooja, is the daughter of Gunaramu and originally belongs to Melwas village in Rajasthan. She married 23-year-old Om Prakash, son of Shesh Ram, in a love marriage around eight to nine months ago despite opposition from both families. The couple later moved to Bengaluru and settled in Agrahara Dasarahalli.
Police said Pooja’s family, allegedly opposed to the marriage, sent four people to Bengaluru to bring her back. The group allegedly abducted her from the couple’s residence and fled in a Hyundai Venue.
Local residents reportedly pursued the vehicle after the incident. During the chase at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the accused allegedly drove recklessly, hitting more than 35 cars and over 100 two-wheelers. The pursuit continued for nearly nine kilometres before members of the public intercepted the vehicle at 4th Cross Road in Vijayanagar Hoshalli.
The vehicle was allegedly pelted with stones, damaging it, while three occupants were pulled out and assaulted before being handed over to Vijayanagar Police.
Six people were injured in the accidents — Prithviraj, 12, Yashika, 9, Amul, 35, Mani, 64, Jayalakshmi, 57, and Santosh, 33. Jayalakshmi suffered a head injury and is being treated in an ICU, while the others are also undergoing treatment.
Police have arrested Rakesh, 31, Karan, 35, and Ayan, 18, all from Rajasthan. Saddam, who allegedly drove the vehicle, escaped and efforts are underway to trace him.
Police said preliminary questioning indicated that Pooja’s paternal aunt allegedly hired the group to abduct her. Investigators have also found that the aunt remained in contact with Pooja after her marriage and had allegedly obtained her address recently.
The vehicle and the three arrested accused remain in police custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances of the alleged kidnapping and identify the roles of others involved.
