The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Tuesday named party president and Binnakandi MLA Badruddin Ajmal as its candidate for the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam, adding another prominent contender to the contest.
Ajmal’s candidature was announced a day before the September 16 deadline for filing nominations. The party had earlier indicated that Rezaul Karim Sarkar could be its nominee but eventually decided to field its chief himself.
The BJP has nominated former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, who took voluntary retirement from government service before joining the party on September 8. The Congress has fielded former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has also nominated Abdul Salam, making the contest broader than the BJP-Congress-AIUDF three-way contest initially indicated.
The Nagaon seat fell vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party and joined the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He subsequently won from the Dispur Assembly constituency.
Ajmal, a former Lok Sabha member, is currently an MLA from Binnakandi. His entry adds an experienced political figure to a contest already featuring Sharma, who previously served as Nagaon’s Deputy Commissioner, and Bora, a former legislator from the region.
The last date for filing nominations is September 16, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 19. Polling is scheduled for October 6 and counting of votes will take place on October 9.
With the major candidates now announced, the Nagaon by-election has emerged as a closely watched electoral contest in Assam. The final list of candidates will be known after the nomination process and scrutiny are completed.
