Actor Gurfateh Pirzada has revealed that much of the intensive Kalaripayattu and lathi training he undertook for his role as freedom fighter Bagha Jatin in the streaming series The Revolutionaries does not actually feature in the show.
Speaking during the promotions of the series in Mumbai, Pirzada said the physical preparation was crucial to portraying the historical figure convincingly. He was joined by Nikkhil Advani, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Bhuvan Bam.
“For me, the first thing was to get the physicality of Bagha Jatin right. I was in a very different space in life before I came on this project. So, the first thing was to get the right kind of body, the physical training that it required and also to gain those 10-15 kgs,” Pirzada said.
He added that he, Saraf and Bam trained extensively in Kalaripayattu and lathi fighting, even though much of that preparation is not visible on screen.
“Me, Rohit, Bhuvan, we were all training a lot in Kalaripayattu and lathi, which most of it you will not see in the show, but it’s just to get the physicality right and to get an in on the world,” he said.
Pirzada said that after building the physicality of the character, he focused on understanding Bagha Jatin’s mindset. He explained that by the time he began filming, he had already spent considerable time reading the script and immersing himself in the world of the series.
“My first shoot day was around the 25th day of shoot of the show because I think on the first day we were shooting the Banaras bits. By the time I got into it, the world of the show had sort of seeped in my head already because I was sitting at home, reading, reading the script again and again,” he said.
Pirzada also credited director Nikkhil Advani for guiding him through the process, just as he did Saraf and Bam.
“I think it just sort of made it that much easier for me. Once I understood the psyche of Bagha Jatin, everything else became easier,” he added.
