US Republican Representative Thomas Massie has introduced articles of impeachment against Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of violating congressional war powers and abusing his office over the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Massie, a Kentucky Republican, read the articles on the House floor on Tuesday and accused Hegseth of “high crimes and misdemeanors”. Among his allegations are violations of provisions of the War Powers Resolution of 1973, continuing US military operations in Iran without congressional authorisation, and disregarding congressional directives seeking to end US involvement in the conflict.
Massie also levelled allegations concerning US military strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels, actions involving Venezuela and military operations in Yemen. He further accused Hegseth of retaliating against critics of the Trump administration for exercising their free-speech rights. These are allegations contained in Massie’s impeachment resolution and do not themselves establish wrongdoing by Hegseth.
The Pentagon defended Hegseth following the move. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said the department remained unified behind the Defence Secretary’s leadership and would continue working to advance US national-security objectives.
Massie’s resolution is privileged, meaning the House is required to take it up within two legislative days, although the Republican leadership could seek to table the measure.
The move comes as the financial cost of the Iran conflict has drawn growing congressional scrutiny. The Pentagon told congressional committees in August that the war had cost more than $42 billion, up from its earlier public estimate of $37.5 billion, according to reporting by The Hill. Separately, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the cost at more than $38 billion as of August 1.
Massie’s effort follows a separate impeachment resolution introduced by House Democrats against Hegseth in April.
