Gurugram Police have arrested another accused in the hit-and-run case involving a woman biker, taking the total number of arrests in the case to two, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Lavanish, was allegedly present in the car with driver Kalyan Bainsla when the incident occurred. Police arrested him from Palwal in Haryana, officials said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bainsla was arrested from Dausa in Rajasthan. The arrests followed an investigation into a video showing a car allegedly hitting a female biker, Sia, on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road.
Police had taken suo motu cognisance of the video and registered a case at the Sector-56 police station. After examining CCTV footage and other evidence, investigators added Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to attempt to murder, to the FIR. The provision carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.
Police said further investigation is underway and indicated that additional action against those involved would follow as evidence emerges. The Gurugram Police also said that lawlessness would not be tolerated and that strict action would be taken against those found responsible.
The development came after Sia’s family submitted her written statement to Inspector Manoj Kumar, SHO of the Sector-56 police station. Police are also recording her detailed verbal statement as part of the investigation.
Sia’s brother, Deepankar Chauhan, said the family had requested the SHO to record her statement at her location because she was experiencing severe muscle pain and muscle pulls and her health had deteriorated amid the stress surrounding the case.
“We want the strictest sections and maximum charges to be pressed against them,” Chauhan said, adding that the family was seeking charges related to attempt to murder, hit-and-run and harassment.
