The Rajasthan Food Safety and Drug Control Department conducted a surprise inspection at a Zepto dark store in Jaipur’s Jagatpura on Thursday as part of the statewide ‘Shuddh Aahar – Milawat Par Vaar’ (Pure Food – War on Adulteration) campaign, uncovering lapses in food storage, hygiene and product handling.
A central team from the department’s Jaipur headquarters inspected the warehouse of M/s J.D.S. Marketing in A-Block, Ramnagaria Vistar, Jagatpura, in the presence of Joint Commissioner Vijay Prakash Sharma. The action was carried out on the directions of Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Gayatri Rathore and under the guidance of Commissioner (Food Safety and Drug Control) Avichal Chaturvedi.
Officials found that prescribed temperature conditions for storing dairy products in the cold room and deep freezer were not being maintained. The temperature recorded at the facility ranged between 6 and 14°C.
In view of the storage conditions, around 1,550 packets of milk, curd and buttermilk, including products of Saras and Amul, were destroyed on the spot. The team also found around 100 kg of damaged food products being stored without the mandatory ‘Not for Sale’ marking. These items were also destroyed.
Around 7 kg of expired products, including muesli, candy and bhujia, were found among items meant for sale. The expired food was seized and destroyed at the facility.
The inspection further revealed sanitation deficiencies, with traces of paan masala and zarda spit found around the dark store and cold room. Dirt and spit marks were also observed on walls, while several iron racks used for food storage were found broken, dirty and rusted.
The department directed the store management to immediately improve food storage, temperature control and sanitation systems. Joint Commissioner Vijay Prakash Sharma also issued a notice to the operator.
To assess product quality, the team collected samples of Pintola peanut butter and honey in the presence of store manager Kailash Chand Meena. The samples have been sent to the State Central Food Laboratory for analysis.
Officials said legal action would be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act if laboratory reports establish adulteration or non-compliance with prescribed standards.
Around 500 orders are reportedly delivered daily from the facility. The department said food safety and hygiene norms are mandatory for all stores and warehouses involved in online food supply and delivery, and warned that enforcement action will continue across Rajasthan under the ‘Shuddh Aahar – Milawat Par Vaar’ campaign.
