The mother of prominent Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das died on Thursday without fulfilling her final wish of seeing her jailed son, after authorities reportedly rejected the family’s request for his temporary release on parole to visit her during her final days.
Seventy-one-year-old Sandhya Rani Dhar died at the Sri Sri Pundarika Dham Ashram in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong district on Thursday morning. She had expressed a desire to spend her final days at the ashram, where her son had lived for a long time, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
Sandhya Rani Dhar had earlier been admitted to a Chittagong hospital after falling ill and was diagnosed with cancer. However, she reportedly did not want to remain in hospital and chose to return to the ashram.
Confirming her death, Das’s brother Anjan Kumar Dhar told Bangladeshi newspaper Kalbela, “My mother is gone. My brother could not even see his mother while she was alive.”
His other brother, Ranjan Kumar Dhar, said the family would take her body to the Hathazari Upazila Health Complex and seek parole for Chinmoy Krishna Das with a medical certificate. Her last rites are expected to be performed at Pundarik Dham in Hathazari.
According to Kalbela, Sandhya Rani Dhar had been deeply distressed by her son’s prolonged incarceration, reports of his illness and repeated denial of bail. The family had hoped that his latest bail hearing could lead to his release, but the denial reportedly increased her anxiety.
On Wednesday, the family approached Chittagong Deputy Commissioner and ex-officio President of the Prison Management Committee Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, seeking conditional parole for Das so that he could meet his ailing mother.
However, according to Bangladeshi daily Samakal, the administration informed the family that there was no provision for granting parole to a prisoner to visit a sick relative.
Chittagong Additional District Magistrate Syed Mahbubul Haque said the family had submitted an application for conditional temporary release, but parole was not available for visiting a sick person. He said the rules provide for parole when a relative has died and that the family had been verbally informed of the position.
Ranjan Kumar Dhar said the family had sought parole simply to fulfil their mother’s wish to see her son at least once.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jot, remains in custody despite reportedly securing bail in two cases. His release has been blocked by two other cases, according to local media reports.
Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, and sent to jail the following day after a Chattogram court rejected his bail plea. The same court rejected his bail again on December 11.
A Bangladesh High Court bench comprising Justice K.M. Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted him bail on Sunday after hearing two separate bail petitions filed by Das.
