Tourist guide Manish Soni, who was critically injured after allegedly being stabbed during a dispute near Jaipur’s historic Amer Fort, died while undergoing treatment at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital on Tuesday, triggering protests and a shutdown of shops in parts of Amer town.
According to police, the incident took place around 10 a.m. on Monday near the Mavtha area of Amer Fort after a disagreement over vehicle movement towards the historic site.
Soni was reportedly trying to stop vehicles from proceeding towards the fort when he got into an argument with a jeep driver identified as Azam. The dispute escalated, following which police alleged that Azam and his associate Nazish attacked Soni with a knife.
Soni suffered a serious abdominal injury and collapsed at the spot. He was rushed to SMS Hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to severe internal injuries and excessive blood loss on Tuesday, police said.
His death sparked anger among local residents, traders and members of the tourist guides’ association. Amer market remained closed in protest, while demonstrators gathered outside the Amer police station and demanded strict action against those responsible and compensation for Soni’s family.
Amer SHO Rajendra Godara said both accused have been detained and are being questioned. Police teams are also searching for the knife allegedly used in the attack.
According to the SHO, Azam has two previous criminal cases registered against him at Amer police station.
With tensions rising following Soni’s death, additional police personnel were deployed in the area. Traffic was also diverted from the Jal Mahal route as a precautionary measure.
Authorities appealed to residents to maintain peace as the investigation into the incident continues.
