Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, formerly a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, was sworn in as the 44th Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan here on Monday.
Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde administered the oath of office in the presence of senior judicial officers, government representatives and top administrative officials. Following the ceremony, Justice Agrawal signed the warrant of appointment issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, formally completing the process of assuming charge.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Premchand Bairwa, several state ministers and all judges of the Rajasthan High Court attended the ceremony. Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas was also present.
The ceremony was also attended by outgoing Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, whose tenure had been surrounded by controversy in recent months.
Justice Agrawal’s appointment comes at a significant juncture for the Rajasthan High Court following developments concerning the office of the Acting Chief Justice. As the new Chief Justice, he will oversee the judicial and administrative functioning of the court, including allocation of judicial responsibilities and administrative supervision.
The change at the helm follows a controversy involving Justice Sharma. Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta had recently written to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant seeking Justice Sharma’s transfer out of Rajasthan and the appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another High Court.
Justice Mehta had raised allegations concerning the exercise of administrative powers and listing of cases. The issue also led to protests by lawyers at the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches, with lawyers demanding that Justice Sharma be relieved of his responsibilities as Acting Chief Justice.
Justice Sharma, who is scheduled to retire later this month, has denied the allegations.
The formal oath-taking at Raj Bhavan marks the beginning of Justice Agrawal’s tenure as head of the Rajasthan High Court.
