Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday ordered strict action against officials found responsible for negligence or oversight following the Satya Niketan building collapse, while directing authorities to seal buildings having a fifth floor as part of preventive measures.
Gupta said an FIR had been registered against the building owner and that action would be taken against those found responsible for violations or negligence.
Speaking to reporters, she said the collapsed structure was old and its pillars had weakened after the basement became waterlogged.
“It was a very old structure. The pillars weakened after the basement became waterlogged, leading to the collapse of the entire building. Action has already been taken in this case, and action will also be initiated against the building owner,” she said.
The Chief Minister said the building immediately behind the collapsed structure had been completely evacuated and would be demolished as a precautionary measure.
“No public activity will be permitted in buildings that are not certified structurally safe. We will not allow students to reside in unsafe PG accommodations,” Gupta said.
She added that students evacuated from the area had been provided accommodation, while the government was taking care of their needs and maintaining contact with their parents.
Gupta, who visited the site again on Monday morning, reviewed the ongoing rescue and relief operations and security arrangements. She directed authorities to conduct intensive inspections of nearby paying guest accommodations and other buildings, with violations to invite sealing action.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said around 80 to 90 per cent of the debris had been cleared manually. He said the adjacent building remained in a dangerous zone, making the operation challenging, and that the NDRF was proceeding methodically.
Sirsa said the Chief Minister had instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner and Chief Secretary that officials found responsible, irrespective of rank, should face immediate suspension and strict action.
He added that students had been accommodated at different locations and said public utilities would also be required to undergo structural audits to prevent unsafe buildings from endangering lives.
