Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Monday questioned the BJP’s demand for his resignation over alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment, asking the Opposition party to explain why he should step down.
Kharge also questioned the BJP’s silence over Basavaraj Kannale, described as one of the key accused in the case, and suspended KPSC Chairman Shivashankarappa Sahukar.
In a post on X, Kharge said BJP leaders had no clear answer when asked why they were seeking his resignation and asserted that raising the demand repeatedly would not conceal the facts of the case.
Kharge said Kannale, who has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and is being questioned, had allegedly appeared at official BJP meetings and accompanied party leaders on domestic and international tours. He also alleged that BJP leaders had attended Kannale’s birthday celebrations, inaugurated his business ventures and shared meals with him.
The Minister further questioned the BJP’s response to allegations that Kannale had attempted to flee the country.
Turning to suspended KPSC chairman Sahukar, Kharge asked why BJP leaders had remained silent over his role in the controversy. He also raised questions about how appointments to the KPSC as members and chairman were made and whether BJP leaders had sought money in connection with such appointments.
Kharge also released photographs of Kannale with prominent BJP leaders, including Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka.
The BJP and JD(S) have intensified pressure on the Karnataka government over the alleged KPSC recruitment scam and demanded accountability. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has also levelled allegations against Kharge over his alleged role in the matter.
Kharge is the son of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
