Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi took a dip in the Ganga in Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh and described the experience as a “truly unforgettable moment”, saying it left him with a deep sense of spiritual connection, humility and gratitude.
Sharing pictures and a video of the experience on X, the Japanese envoy said he immersed himself in the sacred river three times during the Janmashtami weekend. He also lit an earthen lamp, or diya, on the banks of the Ganga.
“Finally, a full dip in the Ganges in Rishikesh—three times! Over the Janmashtami weekend, surrounded by people carrying on centuries-old faith and traditions, I felt a profound spiritual connection, along with awe, humility, and gratitude. A truly unforgettable moment,” Keiichi wrote.
The ambassador has frequently shared glimpses of his experiences across India on social media, including his visits to different states and his interest in Indian cuisine.
On August 18, he enjoyed masala dosa and filter coffee at Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi, describing it as a “wonderful taste of South India”.
Earlier, on August 8, Keiichi and members of his staff visited Gujarat Bhawan, where they sampled dhokla and chaas.
The envoy also participated in an India-Japan Cultural Exchange on Tea at the United Nations House in New Delhi on May 22 to mark International Tea Day. He highlighted similarities in the cultural values associated with masala chai and matcha, particularly respect, hospitality and harmony.
On May 12, Keiichi visited Andhra Pradesh Bhawan with Japanese Prime Minister’s Special Adviser Uno Yoshimasa and enjoyed an authentic thali. He also tried the recommended Double Ka Meetha and praised the warm hospitality.
Through such interactions, the Japanese envoy has been documenting his engagement with India’s diverse cultural traditions, cuisine and heritage while highlighting the longstanding cultural ties between the two countries.
