President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Dr Dinesh Sharma as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, marking a change in the leadership of the strategically important Union Territory.
The appointment will take effect from the date Dr Sharma assumes charge, according to a press communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. The announcement was signed by the President’s Press Secretary, Dr Manisha Verma, and released for immediate publication.
Dr Sharma, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, brings political, administrative and academic experience to the new assignment.
Born in Lucknow on January 12, 1964, Sharma served as Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2017 to 2022 in the Yogi Adityanath government. During his tenure, he handled portfolios including higher education, technical education, science and technology, and information technology.
Before joining the state Cabinet, Sharma served as Mayor of Lucknow for two terms. He was first elected in 2006 and returned to the post in 2012, winning his second term by a record margin.
Sharma has also maintained a long association with academia. He has been a professor of commerce at the University of Lucknow since the early 1990s and has guided numerous research scholars.
He entered public life through student organisations and subsequently rose through the BJP’s youth wing before taking up key organisational responsibilities within the party.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, are administered by a Lieutenant Governor who serves as the constitutional head as well as the head of the Union Territory’s administration. The position involves responsibilities related to governance, development and coordination with the Centre, including matters concerning security, tourism, infrastructure and environmental conservation.
Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi has served as Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory since October 2017.
Dr Sharma is expected to assume charge shortly.
