Local teenager Shreeniti Chowdhury is in contention for a double crown at the KSLTA World Tennis Tour Junior J30 Bengaluru after reaching the singles and doubles finals at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium on Friday.
The fourth-seeded Shreeniti staged an impressive comeback in the singles semi-final, overcoming sixth seed Vasundra Balajee 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. She later returned to the court and partnered Riddhi Shinde to secure a place in the girls’ doubles final.
The 15-year-old will face another Bengaluru player, fifth seed Aahida Singh, in the singles title clash. Aahida defeated Zoha Qureshi 6-2, 6-0 in the other semi-final.
Shreeniti endured a difficult start against Vasundra, falling 0-5 down in the opening set before winning three consecutive games. However, the recovery came too late as Vasundra closed out the set 6-3.
The Bengaluru player then completely changed the complexion of the match. She attacked aggressively with her forehand and frequently moved forward, while Vasundra struggled with unforced errors. Shreeniti broke serve at love in the fourth and sixth games to level the contest.
She carried the momentum into the decider, breaking in the opening game and adding further breaks in the fifth and seventh games to complete the comeback.
Aahida dominated her semi-final against Qureshi, who had earlier eliminated top seed Shaivi Gaurav Dalal. Aahida raced to a 4-0 lead and, despite dropping serve twice, took the opening set 6-2. She then produced a clinical second set to complete the victory without allowing her opponent a chance to recover.
In the boys’ singles, third seed Niyanth Badrinarayanan of the USA ended top seed and home favourite Tejas Ravi’s campaign with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory. Niyanth edged a closely contested opening-set tie-break 8-6 before securing the only break of the second set in the second game and holding on to his advantage.
Sixth seed Fazal Ali Meer defeated fourth seed Vivaan Mirdha 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in the other semi-final.
In the girls’ doubles, Shreeniti Chowdhury and Riddhi Shinde defeated third seeds Tejaswi Manneni and Aditi Paturi of the USA 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final. Zoha Qureshi and Deepthi Venkatesan also advanced after beating Prachi Malik and Riya Gangamma Pudiyokkada 6-4, 6-3.
