At least nine police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), were killed and 28 others injured after armed assailants attacked a police checkpost in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said on Thursday.
The attack took place at the Khazina Banda checkpost in Hangu district, where security personnel engaged the attackers in an exchange of fire.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed said the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to by Pakistani authorities as Fitna al Khawarij, was responsible for the assault.
According to Hameed, police personnel retaliated after the attack and additional security forces were dispatched to the area. Nine policemen, including a DSP, were killed, while 28 others sustained injuries during the gunfight.
The incident comes amid a rise in attacks targeting security forces in Pakistan, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which share borders with Afghanistan.
Earlier this month, two police personnel were killed and 26 others, including 22 policemen, were injured in separate attacks in Bannu and Lower Dir districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In Bannu, armed assailants targeted Miryab police station using an explosives-laden vehicle, triggering a blast followed by a prolonged exchange of fire with security personnel. District Police Officer Captain (retd) Muhammad Furqan Bilal said the attackers attempted to ram the vehicle into the police station.
Authorities said the attackers had also destroyed a damaged bridge on the route leading to the police station before launching the assault, apparently to delay police and rescue teams.
In another incident in Lower Dir’s Haidaray Top area, two police personnel were killed and 16 others injured during a clash with armed assailants.
