Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has recalled his harrowing escape from a private jet crash in 2008, saying he and his friend Adam ‘DJ AM’ Goldstein managed to get out of the aircraft just seconds before it exploded.
Barker revisited the traumatic incident in the new documentary ‘Louder Than Fear’, recalling how the aircraft crashed during take-off at an airport in South Carolina, killing four people and leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
Describing the moments before the crash, Barker said the aircraft appeared to repeatedly lift off and drop back down before striking an embankment, after which the scene descended into “fire and chaos”.
He recalled that Goldstein had been knocked unconscious after hitting his head. Barker said he managed to revive him before attempting to escape through an emergency exit.
“I opened the emergency exit and jumped out right into the jet where all the fuel is, then my whole body caught fire. I’m running and the fire won’t go out, I stop, drop and roll and AM came out and he patted my feet off fire. Ten seconds later the plane blows up,” Barker said.
The crash left Barker with multiple severe injuries. He broke all his ribs, fractured his back in four places and suffered third-degree burns over 65 per cent of his body.
His recovery was prolonged and involved 27 surgeries over more than three months in hospital. Barker said the experience also had a profound impact on his mental health.
“I couldn’t see my kids because 65 per cent of my body was an open wound. I was handling that miserably. I was suicidal in the hospital and I was there for another three and half months and had 27 surgeries,” he said.
Barker’s assistant Chris Baker, security guard Charles Still Jr and the two pilots were killed in the crash. Goldstein survived the accident.
