Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clocked the longest cumulative speaking time in Independence Day addresses from the Red Fort among India’s four longest-serving Prime Ministers, with his speeches totalling 1,177 minutes, according to data compiled for the 80th Independence Day.
The cumulative duration places Modi well ahead of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, whose Red Fort addresses totalled 504 minutes, Manmohan Singh at 417 minutes and Jawaharlal Nehru at 400 minutes.
The figures show that Modi’s aggregate speaking time has exceeded that of his predecessors despite the number of addresses delivered by him being lower than that of some former Prime Ministers. His speeches over more than a decade have generally been lengthy and detailed, covering policy priorities, government programmes and long-term national objectives.
A recurring theme in Modi’s Red Fort addresses has been the goal of building a developed India by 2047.
