Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday wished Pope Leo XIV a full and speedy recovery after the pontiff underwent surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
In a post on X, Modi expressed relief over the successful procedure and extended his wishes for the Pope’s continued good health.
“Happy to learn that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV’s surgery last night was successful. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery as well as continued good health,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery on Tuesday. According to a medical statement released by the Holy See Press Office, surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung using a video-assisted technique to achieve what they described as a radical resection.
The statement, issued by Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, said an examination of tissue during the operation confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma that had been suspected following preoperative tests.
“An intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected from the preoperative examinations,” the doctors said, according to Vatican News.
The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes, and doctors reported that it was successful without complications. Following a brief period of observation, the Pope was transferred to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor. Further examination of the removed tissue was expected to take place in the coming days.
Modi’s message follows his earlier congratulatory note to Pope Leo XIV after his election as head of the Catholic Church in May 2025. At the time, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of peace, harmony, solidarity and service, while reiterating India’s commitment to dialogue and engagement with the Holy See.
In that message, Modi had conveyed the best wishes of the people of India and expressed hope that the Pope’s leadership would advance shared values and promote global peace.
