Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has weighed in on the growing debate over artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on creativity, emphasising that while technology is a powerful tool, it should enhance creative work rather than control it.

Speaking to IANS, Imtiaz said technological advancement could not be stopped and that people should remain open to new developments. However, he stressed the importance of using technology to bring creative ideas to life.

“AI is a very powerful tool, but it is still a tool. The development of technology can never be arrested. One should not be averse to the development of technology. But you need to use technology as something that you want to use to enhance your work or to bring your work to life. Not the other way around,” he said.

The filmmaker further underlined the need to maintain creative independence while embracing new technologies.

“You cannot be the slave of AI. You cannot be a slave to AI,” he added.

Artificial intelligence has increasingly found applications across various stages of filmmaking, including writing, visual effects, editing and post-production. However, concerns have also grown over its potential misuse, particularly in the creation of misleading and sexually explicit content.

Actor Janhvi Kapoor was recently targeted in a sexually explicit deepfake video generated using artificial intelligence. Actors Jr NTR, Chiranjeevi, Vijay Deverakonda and Khushbu Sundar strongly condemned the incident and called for strict legal action and government regulations to address the misuse of AI.

The incident has added to wider concerns about the creation of misleading and sexually explicit content featuring celebrities without their consent. Other actors, including Rashmika Mandanna, Mrunal Thakur and Shalini Pandey, have also been targeted in similar deepfake controversies.

On the professional front, Imtiaz Ali recently directed ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina in lead roles.

The film also features Vinod Nagpal, Dolly Ahluwalia, Rajat Kapoor, Sanjay Suri, Manish Chaudhari, Anjana Sukhani, Banita Sandhu and Danish Pandor in supporting roles. It was released in cinemas on June 12.
