‘Culprits Won’t Be Spared’: Maharashtra Dy CM Eknath Shinde on Attack on Sukhbir Badal

Mumbai, August 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded, assuring that those responsible would face strict legal action.

After learning about the incident, Shinde spoke to Badal’s wife, Punjab MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, over the phone to enquire about his health and wished him a speedy and complete recovery.

The Deputy Chief Minister also contacted the Nanded Superintendent of Police to review the situation and directed the police administration to conduct a detailed investigation, examine any possible security lapses and take stringent action against everyone found responsible.

“Maintaining the sanctity of religious places, social harmony and law and order is the highest responsibility of the Government,” Shinde said.

He stressed that there was no place for violent attacks at religious or social venues in Maharashtra or anywhere else in the country. Shinde said the perpetrators would not be spared and that the investigation would identify everyone involved, with no one protected from legal consequences.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a full inquiry into the incident. He also spoke to the Nanded SP for an update and contacted Badal to enquire about his health.

The alleged attacker, identified by local authorities as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, was detained at the spot. Maharashtra Police have launched an investigation to establish the motive behind the assault.

Minister of State for Home Pankaj Bhoyar also assured that strict legal action would be taken. Speaking while attending a party meeting in Bhandara, Bhoyar said the incident appeared to have occurred shortly before and that he would obtain official details before proceeding further.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when Badal, accompanied by Harsimrat Kaur Badal, his daughters, son and son-in-law, visited the shrine after a pilgrimage to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib.

According to officials, an individual dressed in Nihang attire allegedly attacked Badal with a sharp weapon. His security personnel immediately intervened and overpowered the attacker, preventing further harm.

A police inspector belonging to the Nanded Police Special Protection Unit was also injured while helping foil the assault.
