India’s Chikitha Taniparthi was knocked out of the women’s compound individual event after suffering a narrow 144-143 defeat to Indonesia’s Nurisa Dian Ashrifah in the quarterfinals at the Asian Games here on Thursday.
Chikitha fell behind after the opening two ends but fought back strongly in the third to take the lead. However, she scored 8, 9 and 10 in the final end, while Nurisa responded with 10, 10 and 9 to edge the closely contested encounter by a single point.
The defeat marks the first compound event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in which India have failed to retain the gold medal won at Hangzhou in 2023. Indian compound archers had swept all five gold medals on offer at the previous edition.
Despite the setback, Chikitha has already enjoyed a highly successful campaign in Aichi-Nagoya, winning gold medals in both the women’s team and mixed team events.
Chikitha, Prithika Pradeep and Jyothi Surekha Vennam successfully defended India’s women’s compound team title on Wednesday, defeating China 238-234 in the final. The Indian trio had earlier beaten South Korea in the semifinal.
Chikitha later teamed up with Sahil Jadhav to win the mixed team gold. The Indian pair defeated South Korea’s Park Jungyoon and Choi Yonghee in a shoot-off after the final score was level at 157-157. The victory also secured India a quota place for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where the discipline is set to make its Olympic debut.
Sahil Jadhav also claimed his second gold of the Games in the men’s team event alongside Kushal Dalal and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru, as India edged China after a dramatic comeback.
India recorded its best-ever Asian Games archery campaign at Hangzhou 2023, winning nine medals, including five gold, two silver and two bronze. The compound archers accounted for all five gold medals, while India’s recurve teams added a silver and a bronze.
