Commonwealth Games 2026 champion Preeti was knocked out of the Asian Games women’s 54kg boxing event after losing to two-time world champion Pang Chol-mi of North Korea by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the round of 16 at Nishio Gymnasium here on Friday.
Preeti, who had received a bye in the opening round, struggled to counter Chol-mi’s dominance from the start. The North Korean boxer controlled the first round and secured a unanimous 5-0 verdict before maintaining her advantage in the second round with another 5-0 ruling.
The Indian pugilist attempted to fight back in the final round, but Chol-mi continued to control the bout, picking her punches carefully and preventing Preeti from finding her rhythm. The North Korean completed a 5-0 sweep in the third round to win the contest unanimously.
Chol-mi had entered the round of 16 after defeating Indonesia’s Nabila Maharani in her round of 32 bout.
Earlier, India’s Sachin advanced to the men’s quarterfinals after defeating former Asian champion and World Championships bronze medallist Mohammad Abu Jajeh of Jordan by a split 4-1 decision.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist won the opening round 3-2 in a closely contested start. Sachin then landed his punches more precisely in the second round to take it 4-1, before maintaining his advantage in the third despite a determined effort from the Jordanian boxer.
Sachin secured the bout 4-1 after receiving two 30-27 cards and two 29-28 cards, while one judge scored it 28-29 in favour of Abu Jajeh.
Sachin will next face World Championships bronze medallist Shunsuke Kitamoto in the quarterfinals as he bids for his maiden Asian Games medal.
