Guna, November 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday accused the BJP of using Hindutva to promote hatred, asserting that the ideology should not be equated with Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma.

Speaking to the media in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district during his ‘Satya Sanatan Swabhiman Yatra’, Singh alleged that the BJP’s ideological position was rooted in Hindutva rather than the broader philosophy of Sanatan Dharma.

“Their religion is Hindutva, not Sanatan. Hindutva spreads hatred, not Hindu. Savarkar himself said that Hindutva has no connection with religion,” Singh said, referring to the BJP.

He claimed the BJP had started invoking Sanatan Dharma only after he raised the subject. Singh described Sanatan Dharma as a philosophy that respects all religions and works for the welfare of the entire world, while accusing organisations such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) of following an ideology that promotes hatred.

Singh is undertaking the yatra from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

Congress leader Udit Raj also criticised the BJP and RSS over their interpretation of Hindutva, referring to its definition by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and the concepts of ‘Janmabhoomi’ (birthplace) and ‘Punyabhoomi’ (sacred land).

Raj argued that this framework creates distinctions between communities, particularly Muslims and Christians, whose sacred land, he claimed, is considered to lie outside India.

He also invoked the contributions of different communities to the freedom struggle, claiming that around 61,000 Muslims and nearly 8,000 Sikhs had sacrificed their lives. He accused the BJP and RSS of promoting a divisive understanding of Hindutva and challenged them to address the country’s history and freedom movement.

The remarks from the two Congress leaders have brought the political debate over Hindutva and Sanatan Dharma back into focus.
