Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday challenged Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, saying the government was ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the issue.
Addressing a BJP rally titled ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ in Karnal, Haryana, Shah said, “If you want a discussion, simply write a letter to PM Modi. We are ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the SIR exercise.”
Shah dismissed the Opposition’s allegations of ‘vote chori’ and irregularities in the SIR exercise, arguing that the voter revision process began only in 2025, while the Congress had been losing elections since the BJP came to power in 2014. He accused Rahul Gandhi and INDIA bloc allies of using the issue to explain their electoral defeats.
“Rahul Baba knows that he is going to lose, which is why he blames the Election Commission and the SIR exercise for his defeats,” Shah said.
The Home Minister also accused the Congress of disrupting Parliament and taking its protests to the streets instead of participating in discussions on matters of national importance. He urged the Opposition to abandon what he called an “anarchist mindset” and debate pressing issues.
Shah said the Karnal rally marked the final day of the BJP’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ campaign, organised in response to the Congress’ ‘vote chori’ march. He contrasted the turnout at BJP rallies with the INDIA bloc’s gathering at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, which he described as poorly attended.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, Shah cited the Congress’ declining number of MLAs over the years. He said the party had 1,200 MLAs when Rahul became its general secretary in 2007, a figure that fell to 900 when he became vice-president and further to 700 when he became party president.
