At least seven people, including four civilians and three suspected Boko Haram militants, were killed after armed fighters raided a locality in Cameroon’s Far North region, security sources said on Thursday.
The attack took place overnight in Koza, in the Mayo-Tsanaga division, when heavily armed militants entered the locality while residents were asleep, ransacked homes and opened fire, according to a regional security source.
“ They killed three civilians on the spot, and another civilian died from injuries early this morning,” the source said, adding that security forces confronted the attackers and killed three militants. The area was relatively calm following the clash.
Local media reports said the attackers also abducted a man and two children during the raid. Their whereabouts were not immediately known.
The latest attack comes amid recurring violence in Cameroon’s Far North region, where Boko Haram has targeted civilian communities since 2014.
In September, at least 13 civilians were killed and another injured in an overnight attack in Madegoua, in the Makary subdivision of the Logone-et-Chari division. Local authorities suspected the raid was a reprisal after security forces seized a large ammunition stockpile allegedly intended for Boko Haram fighters.
In another September attack, at least 11 civilians were killed on an island in Lake Chad near Ngouboua in Chad’s Lake Province. According to an army official, militants arrived by canoe and opened fire on people fishing, killing seven men and four women. Soldiers later pursued the attackers and killed nine militants.
The Lake Chad basin, which spans areas of several countries including Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria and Niger, remains vulnerable to attacks by Boko Haram and other jihadist groups.
