Following her victory in the recent US midterm elections, Pia Dandiya, whose family traces its roots to Jaipur, has emerged as a new face in American politics. A former White House Fellow, Apple employee and educationist, she has built her career around public service and expanding educational opportunities for underprivileged children.
Dandiya contested the US House of Representatives election from Florida’s 22nd Congressional District as a Democratic Party candidate. She secured 51.89 per cent of the votes, defeating Republican candidate Casey Askar, who received 48.11 per cent.
Her victory has brought renewed attention to her family’s connection with Jaipur, where several relatives continue to live. Her parents moved from the city to the United States in 1980. Although born and raised in America, Dandiya maintained a strong connection with her ancestral city and frequently visited relatives in Jaipur during school holidays, continuing these visits until her college years.
Her father, Rohit Dandiya, is a physician and an MBBS graduate of Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College. Her mother is associated with the education sector and established a Montessori school in Jupiter, Florida, where Dandiya received her early education.
Education has remained central to her professional journey. At the age of 28, she established a high school in Harlem, New York, to provide quality education to children from low-income families. She served as its founding principal, working to improve academic opportunities for disadvantaged students. Graduates of the institution have subsequently secured admission to prestigious colleges.
Dandiya also served as a White House Fellow, gaining exposure to the functioning of the US administration and policymaking. Her professional experience includes working at Apple, adding corporate and technology sector exposure to her background.
Her journey through education, public service and politics eventually led her to contest the Congressional election as a Democratic Party candidate. With her election to the US House of Representatives, she begins a new chapter in public life, while her Jaipur family roots remain a significant part of her background.
