At least two people were killed and another was rescued after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Delhi’s busy Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday morning, triggering a major rescue operation. Several others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said.
The collapse was reported at around 9.50 am from Gali Sitara, near Chawri Bazaar Metro Station in Old Delhi.
Six fire service units, including a water tender and other rescue vehicles, were rushed to the spot. Rescue teams were searching through the rubble for survivors, with further details awaited.
The incident occurred during the festive rush in one of the national capital’s busiest commercial areas, raising concerns over the safety of buildings in densely populated parts of the city.
The latest collapse follows a series of similar incidents in Delhi in recent months. On October 7, four people were killed when part of a multi-storey building collapsed in north Delhi’s Seemapuri area.
On October 25, an under-construction ground-plus-two-floor structure in Milan Garden, Harsh Vihar, collapsed after an alleged unauthorised attempt to add another lintel or floor caused the lower slab to cave in. A 60-year-old man, Chanderpal, and his 33-year-old son, Vijay Kumar, died in the incident.
Earlier, a building collapse in Satya Niketan on September 6 claimed seven lives. The tragedy prompted the Supreme Court to direct authorities across the country to file affidavits detailing steps taken to comply with its directions on unauthorised constructions.
The Delhi government also initiated action against Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials, suspending five personnel and directing a drive against buildings with unauthorised fifth floors.
