The Bengaluru residence of former Indian hockey player and Olympic gold medallist M.M. Somaya was burgled, with unidentified thieves making off with valuables, including four medals he won during his international sporting career.
According to the police complaint, Somaya had left for Kodagu with his family at around 5 a.m. on October 25. Three days later, at approximately 7.15 a.m. on October 28, his neighbour Narayanan noticed that the front door of the house was open and alerted the family.
A review of CCTV footage from a neighbouring house reportedly showed two unidentified men entering the residence at around 2.34 a.m. on October 28. One suspect was seen wearing a blue shirt and the other a red shirt. The accused allegedly broke open the front door before fleeing with the stolen property.
Among the most significant items taken were four medals from Somaya’s career: a gold medal from the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a silver medal from the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, a bronze medal from the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul and a bronze medal from the 1982 Champions Trophy in Amsterdam.
Other stolen items included two silver cups weighing 72 grams each, a 10-gram gold bangle, six silver spoons weighing 200 grams collectively, a silver pot weighing 80 grams, an eight-gram gold coin and Rs 30,000 in cash.
The estimated value of the stolen property, excluding the sporting medals, has been put at Rs 3.53 lakh in the complaint.
Somaya has urged the police to identify and arrest those responsible, recover the stolen belongings and take legal action. A case has been registered against two unidentified persons under the jurisdiction of Indiranagar police station.
