New Delhi, November 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has written to Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing the party and other political groups of supporting protests that have disrupted commercial activity in Delhi during the crucial festive and wedding shopping season.

The traders’ body has expressed concern over repeated rallies, sit-ins and demonstrations in the national capital over the past month, specifically questioning the Congress rally held on November 1 and the party’s support for other protests.

CAIT National President B.C. Bhartia said the organisation would await Gandhi’s response. It also announced plans to convene a national meeting of business leaders in Delhi immediately after Diwali to decide its future course of action.

The meeting will also finalise the date for a nationwide ‘Dhikkar Diwas’ (Day of Condemnation), which CAIT plans to observe to protest the disruption of business activities.

In its letter, CAIT accused Gandhi of taking contradictory positions by urging people to shop in local markets while supporting demonstrations that, according to the traders, prevent customers from reaching those markets.

Bhartia also invoked Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, arguing that the right to freedom of expression must be considered alongside the right to practise a profession or carry on a trade or business.

He questioned whether political parties and protest organisers accepted responsibility for the financial losses suffered by traders, shopkeepers, street vendors and daily-wage earners when demonstrations disrupt access to commercial areas.

CAIT said Delhi was not merely a venue for political activities but a major commercial centre supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing to the national economy.

Describing traders as partners in nation-building, Bhartia said political opposition was a democratic right but should not come at the cost of other citizens’ livelihoods.

The organisation maintained that the issue extended beyond Delhi, warning that similar disruptions could affect commercial activity in other cities as well.
