A three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Delhi’s busy Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday morning, triggering a rescue operation amid fears that several people may be trapped under the debris.
Rescue officials said they received information about the collapse at around 9.50 a.m. from Gali Sitara, near Chawri Bazaar Metro Station.
Six fire units, including a water tender and other rescue vehicles, were rushed to the spot. Rescue teams were engaged in operations to search for anyone trapped beneath the rubble. Further details, including the number of people affected and the cause of the collapse, were awaited.
The incident occurred during the festive rush in one of the national capital’s busiest commercial markets, raising concerns over public safety in crowded areas.
The collapse comes amid a series of building-related accidents in Delhi in recent months. On October 7, a portion of a multi-storey building collapsed in the Seemapuri area of north Delhi, killing four people.
On October 25, an under-construction ground-plus-two-floor structure in Milan Garden, Harsh Vihar, collapsed after an alleged unauthorised attempt to add an extra lintel or floor caused a lower slab to cave in. A 60-year-old man, Chanderpal, and his 33-year-old son, Vijay Kumar, died in the incident.
Earlier, a building collapse in Satya Niketan on September 6 claimed seven lives. Following that tragedy, the Supreme Court directed authorities across the country to file affidavits detailing steps taken to comply with its earlier directions on unauthorised constructions.
The Delhi government also initiated action against Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials, suspending five officials and ordering a drive against buildings with unauthorised fifth floors.
