Actor Sunil Lahri, remembered for playing Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic television series ‘Ramayan’, has expressed confidence in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film ‘Ramayana’, starring Ranbir Kapoor, while raising concerns about the music he has heard so far.
In a video shared on X on Tuesday, Lahri said he had not watched the film and did not consider himself an authority to judge an epic as significant as the Ramayana. However, he described it as a story carrying values and lessons relevant not only to Indians but to humanity as a whole.
Lahri praised director Nitesh Tiwari and the creative team, expressing faith in their ability to deliver a film that respects the cultural and emotional significance of the epic. He also acknowledged the effort and talent of the artists involved.
His main reservation concerned the music, particularly given the collaboration between composers A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. Lahri said some of the sounds in the songs he had heard had fallen short of his expectations.
He stressed that music was central to a project of this scale and described it as the backbone of the epic’s cinematic presentation. He also felt the compositions should reflect the cultural character of places associated with the story, including Mithila and Ayodhya.
Clarifying that his comments were personal observations as a listener rather than an expert assessment, Lahri wished the filmmakers and cast success.
He also pointed out that the film’s large budget and the livelihoods connected with its production made its success important for many people.
Lahri’s remarks come amid public discussion over the film’s casting, visual effects and music, with the actor choosing to express support for the project while offering a specific criticism of its soundtrack.
