The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday hit back at Rahul Gandhi over his challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a public debate, with party leaders dismissing the demand as a political stunt and questioning the Congress leader’s record and approach to parliamentary democracy.
Punjab BJP in-charge Satish Poonia said the Congress had governed the country for 55 years and argued that Gandhi should first account for his party’s performance before challenging the Prime Minister.
Poonia claimed that the Congress had failed to answer questions raised by ordinary citizens about its years in power. He added that Gandhi could begin by debating even an ordinary BJP worker.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi described Gandhi’s challenge as a “childish drama”, accusing him of making allegations on social media while avoiding parliamentary proceedings. He also questioned the Congress leader’s approach to political debate and accused him of undermining India’s democratic institutions.
West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh said Gandhi had spent the past 12 years criticising the government and argued that greater focus on constructive political work could have helped the Congress.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan, meanwhile, pointed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reported challenge to Gandhi to attend a special session of Parliament and debate the issues there. He asked whether the Congress leader would accept a debate with an NDA representative.
The BJP’s response followed Gandhi’s renewed challenge to Modi to hold an open discussion on allegations concerning anti-national activities and links with foreign forces.
In a post on X, Gandhi asked the Prime Minister to choose any venue for the debate and questioned the BJP’s description of the Opposition as anti-national.
