Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed gratitude to Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for dedicating a stupa in his honour at Gelephu Mindfulness City, describing the gesture as an enduring symbol of the shared spiritual and civilisational heritage of the two countries.
In a message on Facebook, Modi said he was deeply touched by the warmth and generosity shown by the Bhutanese King and people. He accepted the honour on behalf of the people of India, saying the Jangchub Chorten would also reflect the special bonds of friendship between the two nations.
The dedication ceremony was held on November 1, following the construction of 108 stupas at Gelephu Mindfulness City. The Bhutanese King and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju unveiled a plaque dedicating the 76th stupa to Modi.
Rijiju represented the Indian government at the ceremony, which was led by the Bhutanese monarch. Thousands of volunteers reportedly erected the 108 stupas in a single day along the Aie (Mau) river, near the Assam border. Each structure is 15 metres tall, with a distance of 108 metres between them.
The Bhutanese King described the dedication as recognition of Modi’s commitment and India’s support for his vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, a major development initiative of Bhutan.
Rijiju thanked the King for the gesture and reiterated India’s support for the project.
India has also taken steps to facilitate cross-border movement in connection with the initiative, including approving a special temporary immigration facility at Hatisar in Assam to enable the entry and exit of third-country nationals for the event. The government has separately committed to establishing an Immigration Check Post there to ease travel for investors and visitors to Gelephu.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had reaffirmed India’s support for the Bhutanese King’s vision during his visit to the neighbouring country in September.
