US President Donald Trump has claimed that Republicans would have won the midterm elections by a “landslide” had he personally been on the ballot, as Democrats secured control of Congress in a major setback for his party.
Reacting to the outcome on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump said he would accept the election results but appeared to distance himself from the Republican defeat.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he posted.
In another message, Trump indicated that he would take on the role of a political commentator, offering his assessment of why candidates had won or lost.
“I’m going to become a Political Pundit, both good and bad, on the reasons these Candidates won and lost!” he wrote.
The remarks followed a significant Republican setback, with Democrats taking control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Trump’s comments suggested he believed his personal presence on the ballot could have changed the outcome.
Before the elections, Trump had warned that he would use his presidential veto powers to block legislation if Democrats took control of Congress.
In an interview with New York Post columnist Miranda Devine for the newspaper’s ‘Pod Force One’ podcast, released on Monday, Trump said he would veto legislation if Republicans lost.
“I think we’re going to do great. But if we didn’t win, I veto everything. I’ll be vetoing, vetoing,” he said.
In a preview clip aired on Sunday, he had similarly declared, “I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto.” Trump suggested that after repeatedly blocking legislation for a month or two, Democrats would eventually approach him to negotiate a deal.
He also acknowledged that the US Constitution bars him from seeking a third presidential term, although he said he would “love to run again”.
