The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday advised Indian nationals, including students, in France and Italy to follow advisories issued by Indian embassies and local authorities amid ongoing protests and disturbances in the two countries.
“Regarding the disturbances and ongoing protests in Europe, our Embassies in France and Italy have issued advisories,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
“We have advised Indian nationals residing in these countries, including students, to follow the advisories issued by our embassies as well as the local authorities,” he added.
The Indian Embassy in France had issued a travel and safety advisory following protests over the rising cost of living that reportedly escalated into violent clashes. It urged Indian nationals and travellers to remain alert, particularly in crowded places and areas witnessing demonstrations.
The advisory also warned of localised curfews and possible delays or disruptions to road travel and public transport. Indians were asked to avoid large gatherings, follow instructions issued by French authorities and check with airlines or travel agencies for changes to travel schedules.
The Indian Embassy in Rome also advised nationals in Italy to exercise caution, avoid crowded areas and locations where protests were taking place, and follow local news updates.
The advisory followed clashes in several Italian cities. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said stones were thrown at law enforcement personnel in Milan, injuring officers, while disorder in Bologna led to the precautionary closure of the railway station.
