A stronger Democratic showing in the US midterm elections could influence global markets through its potential impact on oil prices, tariff policies, regulatory oversight and the broader geopolitical environment, with possible implications for India, market experts said on Wednesday.
The US dollar index and Treasury yields have declined sharply as investors increasingly factor in the possibility of a Democratic sweep. Analysts believe such an outcome could intensify political pressure on President Donald Trump over his handling of the Iran conflict, potentially easing concerns about elevated crude oil prices.
For India, the impact is expected to be more geopolitical than directly market-driven. Lower crude prices, a weaker dollar and softer US Treasury yields could ease pressure on the rupee, improve foreign investor sentiment and reduce borrowing costs.
However, uncertainty over US trade policy remains a concern. India’s proposed trade agreement with Washington is still unresolved, and experts do not expect the election outcome to significantly improve the prospects of an early deal.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could increase scrutiny of Trump’s tariff measures and attempt to challenge their implementation through legislation. However, analysts caution that a quick reversal of tariffs is unlikely, given the President’s continuing executive authority over trade and foreign policy.
Some sectors could also face near-term pressure. Financial companies, energy firms and parts of the technology industry may encounter greater regulatory scrutiny and the possibility of higher taxes. Energy stocks could face additional headwinds if crude prices retreat.
Meanwhile, artificial intelligence is expected to remain a major investment theme. Analysts at Morgan Stanley anticipate continued spending on AI and data-centre expansion, although governments could have a greater role in determining infrastructure development and regulation.
Experts said the scale of Democratic gains will be crucial, as the results could offer an early indication of changing political sentiment ahead of the 2028 US presidential election.
