New Delhi, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Delhi Police have registered an FIR against senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan over the alleged sharing of a digitally manipulated video of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that purportedly contained remarks critical of India.
According to the police, the matter came to light during cyber patrolling on November 3, when officers noticed a social media post claiming that the video had been shared from Bhushan’s X handle.
In a statement on X, Delhi Police said the handle @thequotesnews had alleged that a doctored video of Lavrov, containing remarks hostile to India, had been circulated through Bhushan’s account. Police said the content was allegedly misleading, defamatory and inflammatory, with the potential to spread rumours and disturb public order.
An FIR numbered 263/26 has been registered at the Special Cell police station under Sections 336(4), 353(1)(c), 356 and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66C of the Information Technology Act.
The case follows a clarification by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which had debunked the video purportedly showing Lavrov criticising India over its internal affairs and oil purchases. The Russian Embassy had also denied the authenticity of the clip.
The MEA’s Official FactCheck account subsequently issued a warning on X, describing the video as fake and cautioning against its circulation.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the risks posed by digitally manipulated content and AI-generated misinformation, particularly when fabricated material involves foreign officials and has the potential to affect public understanding of international relations.
The registration of an FIR marks the beginning of the police investigation; the allegations against Bhushan have not been established through the legal process.
