The latest NCERT Class 9 Social Science textbooks have introduced dedicated chapters on personal finance and entrepreneurship, bringing practical lessons on money management, investment, taxation and starting a business into the school curriculum.
Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, highlighted the additions through posts on X, sharing photographs of the relevant sections from the Economics component of the recently introduced Grade 9 Social Science textbook, Part 2.
Chapter 5, titled ‘Managing Your Personal Finances’, introduces students to the fundamentals of saving, investing, protecting assets and paying taxes. It explains concepts such as fixed deposits, mutual funds, equated monthly instalments (EMIs), risk and returns, and encourages students to think about how they manage money received as pocket money or gifts.
The chapter also explains the importance of setting financial goals and understanding individual risk tolerance before making investment decisions. Students are introduced to the distinction between direct taxes, such as income tax, and indirect taxes, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Sanyal said the objective was to give students practical financial knowledge and life skills at an early stage.
The next chapter, ‘From Ideas to Startups’, focuses on entrepreneurship and the basics of setting up and running a business. It covers business planning, profit and loss accounts, innovation and risk-taking.
Highlighting the approach of the new chapter, Sanyal said it presented entrepreneurship, business activity and innovation in a positive light, contrasting it with what he described as the emphasis on hoarding and black markets in earlier textbook portrayals.
He encouraged readers to examine the new material themselves and shared a link to the NCERT textbook.
The additions bring everyday financial decisions and the fundamentals of enterprise into the learning experience of Class 9 students.
