India’s relatively inexperienced pace attack delivered a commanding performance to bowl New Zealand out for 185 in 40.2 overs in the first ODI at Eden Park on Wednesday. Arshdeep Singh claimed four wickets, Gurnoor Brar took three, while Anshul Kamboj impressed with an economical spell of 2-22 in his 10 overs.
After India elected to bowl, Arshdeep struck early, dismissing Will Young for nine in the fifth over and Henry Nicholls for the same score in the ninth. Both batters fell attempting pull shots, with Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir taking the catches.
Tim Seifert offered resistance with 38 off 43 balls, including three fours and two sixes, but Brar ended his innings in the 15th over. The pacer then produced a brilliant one-handed return catch to dismiss New Zealand captain Tom Latham for three.
Daryl Mitchell made 28 before being run out through sharp fielding by Rohit Sharma and quick work from wicketkeeper KL Rahul. New Zealand slipped to 99/5, with Kamboj then removing Mitchell Santner for four and dismissing Nathan Smith for one, the latter caught by Virat Kohli at second slip.
Glenn Phillips top-scored with 30 but found little support as Arshdeep removed Kyle Jamieson and later dismissed Phillips in the 36th over. New Zealand were reduced to 146/8 and appeared headed for a much lower total.
Blair Tickner, however, mounted a late counterattack, smashing four sixes in a 23-ball 34. His assault included three sixes in Arshdeep’s 38th over. Jacob Duffy contributed 15 before Brar dismissed Tickner, caught behind by Rahul, to end the innings at 185.
Arshdeep finished with 4-70, Brar with 3-44 and Kamboj with 2-22, including two maidens.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34, Glenn Phillips 30; Arshdeep Singh 4-70, Gurnoor Brar 3-44, Anshul Kamboj 2-22) against India.
