Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of avoiding questions raised by the Opposition over alleged vote theft and foreign influence, while criticising his use of the phrase ‘Dimaagi Naxal’ against political opponents.
Backing Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Kharge said the Prime Minister was repeating what he described as a failed political line instead of responding to the Congress’s allegations.
“PM Modi is parroting his flop line of ‘Dimaagi Naxal’! He has NO answer on Vote Chori and the open challenge by Shri Rahul Gandhi to discuss how he mortgaged Indian interests to foreign powers,” Kharge said in a post on X.
He also targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his claim that three crore voters were infiltrators, questioning why the government had not acted against their alleged entry into the country. Kharge said Shah should be held accountable for what he termed administrative incompetence.
The Congress chief further accused the Election Commission of India of changing its position repeatedly on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He alleged that the poll panel had made five U-turns, including changes to Form 6, and questioned the reasons behind them.
Kharge also linked the political confrontation to Parliament’s functioning, alleging that the Opposition’s impeachment move against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and its ‘Vote Bachao’ rally at Ramlila Maidan had unsettled the BJP leadership.
He urged Modi to attend Parliament, face questions and agree to an open debate on the allegations.
The remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi renewed his challenge to the Prime Minister to debate allegations concerning foreign influence and India’s financial system, asking him to choose the venue.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, meanwhile, accused Gandhi of disrespecting institutions and said he should raise his concerns through a parliamentary debate rather than social media challenges. She also referred to Shah’s offer to convene a special session to discuss the SIR and electronic voting machines (EVMs).
