Doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have successfully removed a pair of scissors lodged in the chest of a three-year-old girl who was injured while playing with her five-year-old brother in Gujarat’s Kutch district.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on October 29, when the scissors accidentally pierced the child’s chest. She was initially taken to a private hospital nearby and subsequently shifted to another facility in Gandhidham, where a CT scan was conducted. She was later referred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
The girl reached the hospital around 10 p.m. the same day and was taken for emergency surgery. The operation was performed by a team led by Assistant Professors Dr Kashvi and Dr Mrunalini under the supervision of Dr Rakesh Joshi, Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery. Anaesthetists and other doctors also assisted in the procedure.
Hospital officials said the scissors were removed successfully and the child was stable. She was expected to be discharged shortly.
Doctors said the injury could have been far more severe if the scissors had shifted even slightly upwards or sideways, potentially damaging the windpipe or lungs or causing serious bleeding. A deeper penetration through the bone could also have injured major blood vessels and made the condition life-threatening.
Dr Joshi, who is also the hospital’s medical superintendent, urged parents to closely supervise children while they play and ensure they do not handle potentially dangerous objects without proper care.
He pointed out that young children may not understand the risks associated with objects such as scissors. He also advised parents to seek immediate medical attention if a child suddenly develops breathing difficulties.
